FORCE MAJEURE

For over 20 years, Force Majeure has created Australian dance theatre that reflects on contemporary life and the issues that affect us all. Today, the company makes contemporary performance grounded in hip hop culture and street dance. Artist-led and embedded in the Australian street dance community through Artistic Director Nick Power, it nurtures choreographic practice through mentorships, labs and performance platforms.

Force Majeure is one of Australia’s leading contemporary dance and movement-based theatre companies, founded in 2002 by acclaimed choreographer Kate Champion. Over more than two decades, the company has forged a distinctive reputation for bold, visceral and socially engaged work that places movement, storytelling and collaboration at its centre. From 2015–2025, Artistic Director Danielle Micich expanded this legacy through ambitious interdisciplinary works, supporting hundreds of artists and extending Force Majeure’s impact across the sector.

In 2026, Nick Power became Force Majeure's third Artistic Director and CEO. A pioneering B*boy and choreographer, he brings decades of independent practice across hip hop culture, contemporary choreography, intercultural exchange and community engagement. His leadership builds on the company's commitment to experimentation and embodied storytelling while opening new pathways for street dance, new audiences and emerging artists.

Working from Sydney and Newcastle, the company's new program rests on four pillars:

  • Advancing the Australian Street Dance and Hip Hop Community

  • Telling stories from our region of the Asia-Pacific

  • Creating platforms and learning opportunities for emerging Street Dance Artists

  • Building strong and sustainable regional, national and international partnerships


Since taking up the role, Power has been bringing works in development into the company that sit within its choreographic and collaborative tradition. His national and international reputation for excellence and innovative practice makes him a natural fit for Force Majeure, and his work shares a clear synergy with the company’s history.

Force Majeure respectfully acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, seas, waterways and skies where we work and we pay our respect to Elders both past and present. We recognise that our office is located on Bidjigal and Kameygal Country. We are privileged to gather on this Country to share knowledge, culture, art and storytelling now, and with future generations.
